We use state-of-the-art q-switched lasers to safely and permanently remove pigmented lesions. Q-switched lasers are unique in that they are the only type of laser where the pulse duration is measured in billionths of a second. Because the laser energy is delivered in very, very short bursts, it is able to permanently destroy the cells (melanocytes) that cause the pigmentation.
The reason the pulse width of the laser is so important is that it relates to the permanency of the treatment. With very, very short pulse widths, the tissue containing the sun spots is destroyed and the new cellular tissue that replaces it does not contain the melanin that caused the age spots in the first place. Because of the destruction of the melanocytes, our q-switched laser treatments are very different from topical bleaching creams and even lower energy level (IPL, Intense Pulsed Light) treatments.
During the laser treatment, the light energy of the laser passes through the upper layers of the skin and is absorbed by the darker sun spots (liver spots, acne scars, surgical scars or tattoo). After the sun spot absorbs the laser energy it breaks down and is then safely dissipated in the blood stream. There is no down time for the laser treatments, so you will be able to return directly to work, home or school.
