What are Spider Veins and Vascular Lesions?
Spider Veins (telangiectasias) & other facial vascular
lesions are caused by blood vessels at or near the skin’s surface. Most
vascular lesions are caused by an irregularity in the blood vessels of
the skin, but for spider veins, the appearance of blood vessels is often
a normal part of the aging process and can be caused by hormonal changes,
skin disease, or sun damage.

Causes of Spider Veins and Vascular Lesions
The cause of spider veins and vascular lesions is not completely known. In many
cases the conditions seem to be genetic. For example, sometimes identical twins
are affected in the same area of the body.

Spider veins appear in both men and women, but more frequently in women. Female
hormonal changes may play a role in the development of facial vascular lesions
and spider veins. Causes of these hormonal changes may be puberty, birth
control pills, pregnancy and/or hormone replacement therapy. Spider veins in
the legs may also appear after an injury or as a result of wearing tight
girdles or hosiery held up with tight rubber bands. Spider veins may also occur
in association with large varicose veins.
Spider veins that occur on the nose or the cheeks of light skinned individuals
may be caused by sun exposure.
