As a consumer, it's important to understand what type of laser equipment will be used for your hair removal laser treatment. The type of laser used will determine what percentage of the hair is removed, whether or not the hair removal treatment will be permanent, how many treatments are required and what the potential for side effects is.
By understanding which type of laser is ideal for your
skin type, it will be
easier to make sure you get the most effective and safest laser hair removal
treatments available.
The Diode Laser.
The diode laser is probably the most widely used type of laser for hair removal in the world.
The Lumenis Lightsheer laser
(a type fo Diode laser) is the best selling laser hair removal device of all time, with more in use than
any other type. There are other types of diode lasers, but the most recognizable is
the Lumenis Lighthseer. This laser is used more often in lighter skinned patients, but there are models of
the Diode laser that are marketing with the intent of treating African skin types. While the laser may still
be used for darker skin types, the incidence of side effects is higher with darker skin types.
The Alexandrite Laser.
This type of laser has been in use longer than any other for laser hair removal.
It is the grandfather of hair removal lasers and works very well for lighter skin types.
This laser is not appropriate for darker skin types such as African American East Indian and not
ideal for Middle Eastern. An example of a leading laser in this space is the
Cynosure Apogee.
The Long Pulsed Neodymium Yag Laser (Nd:Yg).
This laser is specifically designed for and very safe for dark skin types.
It can also be used very effectively for those patients (especially men) with very thick coarse hair.
The deeper penetration and longer wavelength of the Yag Laser means that it can more easily bypass the
dark surface skin color and target the base of the hair follicle deep beneath the surface of the skin.
While this laser may require more treatments to achieve the same % of hair removal, it is a very safe and
effective way to achieve permanent hair removal for dark skin types. Examples of long pulsed Nd:Yg lasers
are the Sciton Profile.
IPL.
Intense Pulsed Light as IPL is known, is not a laser and is therefore limited in it's effectiveness for permanent hair removal.
While IPL is known to be able to remove hair, we have found it to be a non-permanent and riskier technology, especially for darker skin types.
Because IPL uses many different wavelengths of light, the practitioner is required to achieve ever higher energies to heat the bulb of the hair
follicle enough to achieve hair removal. Because of this, side effects are much more common, especially with darker skin types.
