Facial Symmetry
Facial symmetry is an important aspect of a youthful appearance. A face is symmetrical when the appearance of one side matches the other. As we age, facial symmetry can change for a number of reasons. Volume may be lost differentially creating the appearance that one side of the face is thinner than the other. Bone loss may cause a difference in contours and facial lines from side to side. Differential sun damage (driver's side of the car) can also have an effect on skin laxity (sagging) that may affect the symmetry.
When facial symmetry changes, we use Botox injections to lift or draw down the facial muscles to correct the vertical asymmetry. Volume loss in the fatty tissue affects symmetry (for example on the sides of the chin) and is repaired with dermal fillers that are used to even out the differential tissue loss.
The patient below had volume loss in her outer chin area that made it very apparent that the sides of the face were not symmetrical. Using Restylane, we were able to fill both sides of the chin to create a fuller, more symmetrical appearance.
