Causes of Cherry Hemangiomas
Cherry hemangiomas are a fairly common condition that most of our patients have never heard of. Because they do not represent a health risk and are normally quite small, most patients either don't notice them or are not bothered by them. We use several different lasers to treat cherry hemangiomas including the long pulsed yag laser and the pulsed dye laser. Pulsed dye lasers are specifically designed to treat vascular conditions such as cherry hemangiomas and they work by focusing energy on the hemoglobin in the blood. Using the pulsed dye laser allows us to heat up and close the small blood vessels that make up the cherry hemangioma. Heating these blood vessels up enough closes them completely and eliminates the cherry hemangioma.
The long pulsed yag laser is also used to treat cherry hemangiomas. It works in a similar fashion to the pulsed dye laser in that it heats and closes the blood vessels that make up the cherry hemangioma.
Cherry hemngiomas can take as little as 1 or 2 and as many as 6 laser treatments. Both of the lasers used for the removal of cherry hemngiomas can cause discomfort. During laser treatments you may feel, hot, snapping or prickling sensations at the surface of the skin. The laser Treatments are relatively short, normally not lasting more than a few minutes, but this depends on the number of hemangiomas you have. There is no down time associated with the procedures.
