Structure and Support

Collagen and elastin in the skin provide support for tissue development, strength and elasticity. Excess collagen leads to a fuller face, softer contours and fewer convexities (depressions). As we age, collagen and elastin begin to weaken and break down, which can lead to skin laxity (sagging) and the development of wrinkles.

The support structure of the face, our bones, changes over time. As the bone support structure weakens and/or recedes the face changes and adjusts to bone loss. The skin's structure and support system are repaired using dermal fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane to build "support columns" that strengthen and thicken the dermal tissue by stimulating new collagen and elastin development.

Return to The Art of Facial Shaping

The patient below was injected with Restylane "columns" in the cheeks to provide support and volume. Notice in the before picture how the cheek area is seperating from the under eye bone structure creating a pocket of volume loss that runs horizontally under the eye and across the cheek. Using Restylane columns, we bridge the gap created by this volume loss eliminating the depression in the cheeks and smoothing the area. This eliminates the appearance of sagginess in the cheeks as seen in the before picture.
