For many women, stretch marks are a result of either sudden weight gain or pregnancy.  Often, the stretch marks are associated with excess skin and tissue in the abdominal area.  A common misconception is that undergoing a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) will remove all of the existing stretch marks. 

Many patients that seek an evaluation by a surgeon discover that they are not candidates because they do not have enough excess skin or tissue to perform the procedure.  Another factor to consider is that many stretch marks rise above the umbilicus (belly button).  Because only a specific segment of tummy tissue may be residual stretch marks may be left behind.  In addition, some patients that chose laser treatments over a tummy tuck expressed concerned with undergoing a surgical procedure vs. laser treatments.

Although only a board-certified plastic/general surgeon can offer a professional opinion as to who is or isn’t a candidate for abdominoplasty, laser treatments for stretch marks are a good option for most or, in many situations, may be one’s only option if a tummy tuck is out of the question.
