What is Poikiloderma?
Poikiloderma is a condition that occurs most commonly
on the neck and chest. It refers to the erythema (redness) associated
with a mottled pigmentation seen on the sides of the neck upper chest.
Most patients that have the condition have a mild form and do not seek
medical attention for treatment, and in most patients it is only a cosmetic
concern.

Causes of Poikiloderma
The exact cause of the condition is unknown, but Poikilodermatous lesions may
be seen in certain skin conditions of genetic disorder. Chronic exposure to
ultraviolet (sun) light also appears to be a primary factor, which is supported
by the finding that lesions occur on sun-exposed areas.

Prevention
The simplest way to protect against the further development of Poikiloderma is
to stay out of the sun. If you must be exposed to the sun, make sure to use
sunscreen with an SPF factor of at least 15. Use only sunscreen blocks UVA and
UVB rays.
