Poikiloderma is a condition that occurs most commonly on the neck
and chest. It refers to the erythema (redness) and sun damage (pigment) associated
with mottled, uneven or "leathery" looking skin.
Most patients that have
Poikiloderma have a mild form and do not seek medical attention for treatment,
either because it is not bothersome enough or because they are not aware that laser
treatments can help.
Poikiloderma is a cosmetic concern and poses no other health risks on its own.
While no cause has been specifically identified, chronic exposure to ultraviolet (sun) light appears to be a primary factor, which is supported by the finding that the pigmented and vascular lesions occur primarily in sun-exposed areas of the neck and chest.
The simplest way to protect against the further development of Poikiloderma is to stay out of the sun. If you must be exposed to the sun, make sure to use sunscreen with an SPF factor of at least 30, and use only sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays.
