melasma treatmentAt Celibre we have developed two topical programs to safely and effectively treat and control problem Melasma:

Our Melasma treatments use a combination of topical products. The program used for your situation depends on what you have tried in the past as well as your skin type – Asian, Hispanic, Caucasian, African - and your life stage - premenopausal, perimenopausal or postmenopausal. Our Melasma treatment programs use depigmentation agents as well as exfoliating treatments like glycolic acid chemical peels.

The difference between the traditional methodology of using just a hydroquinone product is that we understand the importance of thinning the stratum corneum (outer layer of dead skin cells) through exfoliation to increase the absorption of the depigmtation agents. We are also acutely aware of the FDA warning to limit the use of hydrouinone to a 3 month period before having the patient washout for another 3 months (where they do not use hydroquinone).

Melasma Before and After Pictures

One of the depigmentation products we use for Melasma treatment, Cosmelan MD, is a newer and advanced depigmentation program. It consists of an in-office mask and take home products that utilize several high strength depigmentation compounds including hydroquinone that can be used to safely and effectively inhibit the development of the pigment associated with Melasma. Because the product uses high strength depigmentation agents AND exfoliation agents, we have found it to be an excellent alternative to those that have used hydroquinone creams in the past.

The Celibre depigmantation program does use a hydroquinone active ingredient between 6% - 8% (4% is the most that can be used in an over the counter product). The Celibre depigmation uses prescription strength hydrquinone (up to 8% currently), and is different from many other bleaching programs because of the in office chemical peels performed to increase absorption of the active ingredients. In addition, we do not keep our patients on Hydroquinone for more than 3 months at a time because of the FDA advisory against this practice. During the period in between hydroquionone treatments, another topical depigmantation product is used that does not contain any Hydroquinone. We believe that alternating our patients on and off of Hydroquinone is the safest way to use the product long term.
