There are 4 very common injection dermal fillers – Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane and Radiesse. Of these products, three are hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers – Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring part of the body and the active ingredient in these products is a synthetic version created by the manufacturers. Naturally occurring hyaluronic acid is what makes a baby’s skin so soft and also helps with joint lubrication. It has the ability to absorb up to 1000x its weight in water, which gives it the volumizing properties that are so important for injection fillers.
Hyaluronic acid based wrinkle fillers are very safe because they are quickly and easily reversible. Because Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane are all thinner in consistency than Radiesse, they can also be used more easily in sensitive areas such as the lips and the under eyes.
Radiesse by contrast is a great “foundational” dermal filler. Because it is thicker and is injected deep in the dermis it is excellent for building up larger surface areas like the cheeks. It also has a longer duration than the hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers but is generally harder to use and you will have better results with a more advance injector.
