Treating Acne Scars
There are many different types of acne scars and different types of acne scars
develop in different ways. Textured acne scars may appear when dense, fibrous
tissue builds up beneath the surface of the skin. This fibrous tissue develops
in response to the trauma of acne itself and forms during the healing process.
Repeated trauma (pimples and cystic acne) to the area causes the collagen and
elastin to be replaced by irregularly shaped fibrous tissue, which then causes
the textured acne scar.

Textured acne scar types include raised (hypertrophic), pitted, rolling/shallow
or "boxcar". Boxcar scarring has sharp edges and deep grooves which makes them
particularly challenging to treat.

Laser Acne Scar Removal Questions
Pigmented (colored) acne scars occur in response to inflammation associated
with the healing process. When acne forms, an inflammatory response brings
either red (in the cause of light skinned patients) or brown (with dark skinned
patients) pigment to the area. The development of pigment in response to the
inflammation is a very natural part of the acne healing process, but
unfortunately, leads to the development of pigmented acne scars.

Acne Scars Before and After Pictures
Because pigmented acne scars are very different than textured acne scars, the
way in which we treat them with lasers differs as well. For pigmented acne
scars there are three different lasers used to remove the red and brown scars
as well as a very effective topical program. For textured acne scars there are
three different lasers used for improving the texture of the skin and the
laser(s) used is determined by the type of scars, severity of the scars, skin
type and whether or not the patient's lifestyle and schedule permits social
downtime during the healing process.
