There are many different types of acne scars and many different ways to treat them at our practice.
Textured (bumpy or indented) acne scar develops when dense, hard scar tissue builds up beneath the surface of the skin. This fibrous scar tissue develops in response to the trauma of acne itself and forms during the healing process.
Repeated outbreaks (pimples and cystic acne) to the same area causes the collagen and elastin that form the building blocks of the skin to be replaced by irregularly shaped scar tissue, which causes bumpy, irregular acne scars. There are several different types of textured acne scars and you can learn more about the different types here.
There are also pigmented (colored) acne scars. Brown and red acne scars occur in response to inflammation associated with the healing process. Red scars typically form in lighter skin types and brown scars in darker skin types. Colored acne scars can be treated with lasers or topical products.
