Steroid (Kenalog) injections involve a small amount of
medication that is injected into cystic (large and bumpy) acne lesions to help resolve them much
quicker. Steroid injections are very
useful for large, painful, nodular lesions to help provide relief from the
inflammation and tenderness and for cosmetic benefits. Generally speaking, these lesions will
dramatically improve or resolve within 24 to 48 hours or sooner.
It should be understood that steroid
injections are not meant to manage or prevent acne but rather are useful for a
more immediate, temporary solution for large painful and nodular lesions.
There are certain potential adverse or negative side effects that must
be considered when weighing the benefits of steroid injections. However, in most instances, the use of
steroid injections offers a good option for many suffering from acne.
