Laser Hair Removal and Polycystic Ovarian Disease?

According to the National Women's Health Institute, one in ten females will be diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD).   Girls as young as eleven years of age may begin to have symptoms of this disease that tends to run in families.  Briefly, PCOD affects the level of hormones in a woman – specifically levels of androgen.  High circulating levels of androgen may lead to weight gain, acne, increase in skin pigmentation, and hair growth.

Although there are oral medications that your physician may prescribe to regulate the hormonal activity, many of our patients benefit from treatments for the side effects of this condition that may or may not be corrected by a hormonal treatment plan.  For example, hormonal levels may not indicate a need for correction; however, the level may be enough to stimulate dark, coarse, facial hair growth.  This often equates to deep emotional impact for women all ages.

Current research indicates that laser hair removal with class IV medical lasers is an excellent treatment option for those affected by hair growth from PCOD.  Although it is imperative to have the underlying condition addressed by a physician, the side effect of increased hair growth can be addressed concurrently with laser hair removal.

When considering laser hair removal treatments, make certain the practitioner is knowledgeable with how to treat your skin type (color) and has the appropriate laser technology to render safe and effective treatments.
