What causes sun spots?

Age spots, liver spots and sun spots are known by the medical term "solar lentigines".  These spots (lesions) are benign (non-cancerous), flat, and located in the upper layer of skin, the epidermis.  Liver (age, sun) spots are brown in color and may be found on any sun-exposed area of the body, but often appear on the face and hands.  Often, age spots do not reveal themselves until later in life because as the skin thins and fatty tissue is lost, they become easier to see.   Many people refer to these lesions as “age spots” when they actually are directly related to sun exposure and not age.

Age spots are very effectively treated with class IV medical lasers.  Wearing broad-band sunscreen diligently will protect the age spots treated with lasers as well as help prevent new age spots from developing.
