What are the risks of lasers?

Lasers are classified by a rating system I-IV which designate a set of regulations with regards to their operation.  Class IV lasers represent those lasers that have the ability to cause the most harm to skin and tissue.  These class IV lasers also have the potential for excellent outcomes because of their powerful and precise abilities.

Class IV medical lasers harness thermal (heat) energy that is then delivered to a specific target for an end result.  The target that the laser seeks is generally determined by its wavelength.  Because of the thermal energy being used, lasers by their very nature, will always have inherent risks involved.  Some of the risks associated with cosmetic laser treatments are as follows:

*Hyperpigmentation:  This is a temporary or, less common,  permanent, darkening of the skin where the treatment was performed.

*Hypopigmentation:  This is a loss of pigmentation (color) to an area treated.  This usually is a transient condition, but it is more concerning than hyperpigmentation.  This adverse outcome is less common than hyperpigmentation.

*Blisters/Burns:  This adverse outcome may be related to inappropriate settings, poor technique, lack of proper cooling of the skin during the treatment, contraindications such as recently tanned skin, or an unexpected, exuberant response of the skin.

To help minimize the risks associated with laser treatments, consumers/patients should focus on the training and expertise of the practitioner performing their laser treatments.  The medical staff should be educated in laser safety & physics, skin types, tissue reactions, and much more.  Currently in California, state regulations mandate that licensed professionals performing class IV medical laser treatments must be RN's, Physician Assistants, Nurse practitioners or Medical Doctors.  Anyone else using cosmetic lasers is breaking the law.
