Can lasers be used for Nevus of Ota birthmarks?

The short answer to whether or not lasers can be used effectively for the removal of Nevus of Ota birthmarks is "yes".  The long answer is more complicated and essentially boils down to the fact that these types of birthmarks are associated with deep dermal (lower skin layer) pigment.  Because nevus of ota birthmarks are usually deeply situated in the dermis, the results of the treatment can be highly variable.  Some respond quite well and partial clearance of the mark can be seen and others do not clear at all.  In either case, the only laser option that is considered an effective alternative is a Q-switched laser. After 3 very aggressive Medlites and 1 QYAGV – the patient had no response at all.  The patient was prepared for this outcome.  Our nevus of ota birthmark removal patients get realistic expectations for their laser treatments as the outcome of their program can be highly variable.
