Botox has many uses, but the primary function of Botox is to relax key muscles. With consistent usage, Botox has the ability to not only relax the muscles that it is injected into, but soften and change the shape of the muscles as well. This happens in response to the fact that the muscles are not being used as frequently or as vigorously.
The jaw muscle that Botox is injected into for reduction or softening of a square jaw is called the Masseter muscle. It is the primary muscle located on the cheek where the upper and lower jaw bone meet and often clenches tightly. Relaxing this muscle does not change the ability to speak or chew; however, it will lend to a softer, more rounded appearance of this part of the face. Many patients indicate that this treatment has also helped with teeth grinding and jaw clenching.
The softening of this large muscle is a process that takes time. The end outcome takes time and is very gradual and natural in appearance.
Typically the muscles will respond over a period of 6 months – 1 year, which spans 3-4 injection procedures. To learn more about the use of Botox for a square jaw, please contact us for a FREE consultation.
